Program Overview
Dorel Juvenile Group owns several brands in the baby sector including Safety 1st, who produces and sells products for parents in the infant health, home safety and entertainment categories. The Smart Nursery was an initiative with the objective of disrupting the way parents stay connected to their baby. I will cover 2 projects in this section:

PROJECT 01
Wi-Fi
Baby Monitor
with Smart Audio Unit
The Safety 1st WiFi Baby Cam is the premier video monitor designed specifically for nursery use. It provides a crystal-clear view of your baby even in low light conditions, optimally within a 5-10ft range, without the distortion commonly found in standard security cameras.

This was our project mission- to help parents stay connected to their baby remotely through the mobile app or at home with the portable audio companion. Both provide programmable alerts for movement and sound to give new parents confidence and peace of mind.
Smart Audio Companion
Research shows that many parents are reluctant to use their smartphones as video monitors. The primary concerns include rapid battery depletion and the preference for a dedicated monitoring device.
Smart Audio Development
The program was subject to stringent time constraints due to client demands. To accelerate the development process, a rapid form study was initiated.
Component Layout
The round design was most preferred by parents because it had the smallest footprint and was easiest to slide into a pocket during daily activity around the house.
2D/3D Form Study
The second round of prototypes included design details that would help determine the best user interface. These samples were used to test LED location, button placement and portability.
The light ring pulses when the monitor picks up sound or motion such as baby crying or rolling over
The audio unit gives parents the option to monitor without using their smart phone.
The Power button can change color to indicate low battery, charging, or charge complete
Camera Development
The video component of the connected ecosystem was based on an off-the-shelf camera offered by an overseas supplier.
Due to the tight timeline and limited budget, the decision was made to launch with material and finish updates only.

The design intent: appeal to parents looking for a nursey-friendly solution with a high tech yet approachable feel
The designs had to fit with the Safety 1st brand language but be modern enough to suit use cases outside of the nursery

Crib accessories come with strict product regulations set forth by the CPSC for Child and Infant safety. Specific restrictions for crib accessories must be considered when evaluating camera mounting configurations and assembly options.

Construction
Taking into consideration the mounting restrictions, varying crib dimensions, and child safety regulations, it was important to look at basic architecture and construction before detailing in 3D.
